If you are thinking about becoming self employed, you may have the vision in your head that it is all sitting on your couch working in your pajamas. For some people this may be part of the reality of working for themselves. This is not the picture. There is so much more when it comes to becoming self employed that many people do not know about all that they may be getting themselves into when they decide to go this route.

Becoming self employed can be one of the best things that you ever do for yourself. This article is not meant to make you decide to go back to working for someone else. This is more a reality check about the ways things may go for you once you make this move. There are people that just can not hack it when it come to becoming self employed. But for those that can, the rewards can be great.

You are responsible for paying all taxes when becoming self employed. If you look at your current paycheck, you will see a list of taxes that are taken out every time that you get paid. Just because you stop working for someone else it does not mean that you do not have to pay these. To be truthful, when becoming self employed there are other taxes that you need to pay. Most people who work for themselves choose to pay taxes quarterly to make the end of the year filing much simpler on themselves. Becoming self employed may mean that you need to get an accountant to help you with doing this. It is a wise investment that can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

Number Two

Remember all of those benefits that your employer gave you like vacation time, retirement plan, and health insurance. You are now going to be in charge of all of these when you work from home. They are very simple to put in place when you are becoming self employed. The key is to remember to set them up and budget for them. One of the hardest things to get used to is not having vacation time or paid time off. When you are becoming self employed, if you do not work then usually you do not get paid. It is as simple as that.

Number Three

Before you make the decision of becoming self employed, you need to make sure that you can work without someone checking up on you. You will no longer have a boss checking in on you and holding you accountable for your work. It is very easy to put off doing work when you work for yourself. Being able to work and finish projects alone is key to becoming self employed.

Taxes can be a killer when you are self employed, you have to be good at saving up for that.
