It seems that the case of identity theft are on the rise. Any where that you go, you can hear the sad tale of some unsuspecting person who had their credit ruined by such an event. Often times, this person was unaware of what was going on until they apply for a mortgage or some other big purchase. You do not want to be one of these sad stories.

The thieves that are working to get your information or getting smarter. They come up with new scams and ways to get enough information on you so that they can take over your life and credit rating. If you do not want to be a victim of identity theft, there are some things that you will have to do. Many of these steps are stuff that you will need to keep in mind and do every day to keep your good standing.

Step One

Never give out your social security number to someone that you do not know. Whether it is someone calling on the phone pretending to be your credit card company or perhaps a person online that is offering you a job, you need to be careful about who gets this type of information. Identity theft tries to tap into our fears and needs to get the information that they need. They will tell you that their has been some activity on your credit card that may be fraudulent and that they need your social security number to verify who you are. This is a scam!

Step Two

Shred every piece of paper and all documents before you throw them away. When it comes to identity theft, the trash is an easy place to get your information. Many people do not think to shred their bills once they have paid them or other pieces of mail for that matter. You should always have a paper shredder handy to make sure that no one can get any type of information off of paper that you are putting in the garbage.

Step Three

Check your credit scores at least once a year. You can get a free copy of your credit report once a year. It is important to get a copy from all three credit agencies. Each credit report could have different things on them. This is a very quick way to see if you are a victim of identity theft. If someone has used your information to open a line of credit, it will show on one of these reports. But remember just because nothing shows right now, it does not mean that someone does not already have your information and will open an account next month.
